How Long Does Facelift Surgery Last?Posted by in Plastic Surgery
When considering plastic surgery, specifically a facelift or any type of facial plastic surgery, you have to weigh the benefits versus the risks. One important benefit to consider is certainly how long will the results last, right? If you undergo an invasive surgery like a facelift, you want to know that the results you see will last you a reasonable amount of time. In order to get answers to questions like these who would you thing to ask?
Would you simply ask the facial plastic surgeon that you meet with to discuss the surgery, or is there a greater pool of research that you can draw from? The answer to that question is most certainly turn to your surgeon for more information but also take advantage of the latest research that has come out measuring this very thing.
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal Publishes Long Term Study Results About Facelift Surgery
One of the most respected medical journal’s in the industry has recently completed a follow up study to answer this very question; to see how long after having a facelift the results tend to last. What they found in their study was that approximately 75% of the studies participants continued to look younger at 5 years post procedure. While it’s important to note that surgery cannot stop the aging process (which will continue after the procedure) but the aesthetic results tend to last giving a positive result at least 5 years out.
The study was completed in the year 2012 and looked at a range of physical attributes by taking standardized photos for the fifty participants at regular intervals. The physical attributes were various items commonly reviewed prior to surgery. Things like your jowls are measured, angle of your chin, wrinkles in various places, etc… The point of this blog post is not necessarily to get into the specifics of the study (because it’s a very well respected trade journal who conducted it) but more to let people considering a facelift know that you can reasonably expect a 5 year result (well at least 75% of people in the study achieved this) but of course consult with your surgeon about this as well.
Benefits of Facelift Surgery Last For a Reasonably Long Time
Of course results will vary per the individual and of course depend on the level of skill that your surgeon possesses but according to the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal most people will maintain an aesthetic benefit for more than 5 years after the procedure.
Now, think about the benefits versus the risks? You have more information to help you make the decision to do it or not to do it. Make sure to research as much as you can and educate yourself prior to having a facelift or any type of facial plastic surgery.
